Marvell Waithe has been on the Rutgers radar for quite some time. We read about him nearly deciding to join the Scarlet Knights last apring as Waithe was close to signing with Rutgers, but committed to Loyola of Chicago, and took summer classes there last year. He returned for a fifth year of high school after the NCAA changed a rule for incoming Canadians, requiring them to have 14 core classes instead of eight. Waithe, a 6-foot-9, 185-pound forward from the Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute in Toronto, has been compared to a Tayshaun Prince-type forward who can block shots, shoot the 3-pointer, rebound and run the floor according to Ro Russell, who founded the Toronto Academy Prep School (TAPS, a program team that finished 45-5 against elite competition on the prep circuit last season in which Waithe scored 25 PPG and added 10 rebounds a contest. Russell said Waithe’s attending Rutgers was dependent on whether he was cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse and will need to add some weight and strength to compete in the rugged Big East.
Rutgers has one more scholarships open at this time and despite their desperate need for size in the frontcourt among their younger players, they are not expected to offer Mike Davis a scholarship, despite the many connections Davis has with the Rutgers staff, specifically Craig Carter. Davis is likely to commit to Seton Hall in the coming days. With two seniors, both frontcourt players (Joynes and Bailey), the Scarlet Knights better get moving on 2008 frontcourt prospects early and often!
